5-26-06 (1:40AM EDT)---- Oshii's Kerberos Could Return To Film
Based on the master's lifework, Bunka Broadcasting has revealed they will air the Mamoru Oshii scripted radio drama "Kerberos Koutetsu No Ryouken" (Hound of the Steel Kerberos) on May 31st in Japan. Kawai Kenji will provide music. It's been revealed this work and the delivery of related images are being handled by a newly formed company called Raiden involved in wireless broadcasting and Internet streaming. Oshii said the planned cross media promotion and collaboration could lead to a new film adaptation. After the planned broadcast, the drama may be packaged with related design materials in the form of a CD or DVD. A 3DCG trailer and interview for the project will be offered online free of charge. The Kerberos saga started in Oshii's live action film Red Spectacles and unites 2 of his passions: heavily armed and armored riot police and machine guns. The "Protect Gear" armored suit and signature blood red glowing eyes of the Kerberos panzer shock troops has become a popular mecha of sorts in Japan. Although places, people and storylines change in each incarnation of the work, the Kerberos characters later transitioned into Production I.G.'s anime movie Jin Roh and manga illustrated by Kamui Fujiwara. The stage of the new drama is Europe and World War II's eastern front. The Germans are using the Protect Gear armored troops against Russia. Oshii is writing all 30 of the dramas by himself, he said "Kerberos is an original story that exists only in my head, and knowledge concerning war and arms is also necessary". Seiun Award winner Suemi Jun (The Tower of Purgatory) has redesigned the Protect Gear suit for the drama, and the result is something resembling a dark suit of medieval armor. Oshii says he drafted the redesign to harden the Kerberos imagine within him. He may use the new design in future projects. Additionally, the director says he will consider making a film based on the image in 3 years. One of the holdbacks to charging forward with such a project now seems to be the large world scale you have to portray in a battlefield story. The radio drama and new designs serve as a foundation for any forthcoming movie. A 3DCG video trailer created by a young CG animator of production IG without permission was screened at the announcement symposium. The sequence will be eventually be made available online. Oshii likes the 3DCG medium what the animators were able to do with his story and could be leaning towards it as a canvas for future developments. Watch Impress has images from the event.
